Compare Equity Release Options

A reverse mortgage is only one way to use home equity. The better question is which option fits your income, goals, risk tolerance, and long-term plan.

HELOCFlexible access

Payments are required, rates can rise, and the limit can be reduced.

RefinancePossible lower payments

Can help with debt, but income and payment rules still matter.

Stay PutNo new mortgage

Sometimes the smartest answer is not borrowing at all.

Reverse MortgageOptional payments

Can work well, but it is not right for everybody.

Find your best fit with independent guidance, no lender bias, and no extra cost to you.

“Is a reverse mortgage good or bad?”That’s the wrong question.

The real question is which borrowing tool fits your age, home, income, debts, and goals. A reverse mortgage can be wrong. A HELOC can be wrong. A regular mortgage can be wrong too.

Reverse Mortgage, HELOC, or Regular Mortgage?

The real risk is not just the rate or the payment. It is choosing the wrong borrowing tool for your situation.

If expert advice costs you no extra money, why guess?

A HELOC, regular mortgage, and reverse mortgage are completely different products. A HELOC can be useful if you plan to pay it off quickly, but it is a demand loan with required monthly payments, a variable rate, and a credit limit the lender can reduce. A regular mortgage may have lower rates, but the monthly payments are usually higher because you are paying principal and interest, and payout penalties can be much larger than people expect. A reverse mortgage can protect cash flow because payments are optional, but it still has fine print and may not be right if you plan to pay it out soon.

Reverse Mortgage

No required monthly mortgage payment

Can improve cash flow while you stay in your home. The details, costs, and long-term fit still need to be reviewed carefully.

HELOC

Flexible, but it is a demand loan

Your credit limit can be reduced, payments are required, and the rate can move whenever prime changes.

Regular Mortgage

Can create payment pressure

A refinance may help some people, but adding or extending mortgage payments in retirement can make cash flow worse.

If you are using a HELOC to make payments on another mortgage, that’s a very bad strategy. You could end up with two payments, less room to breathe, and fewer options later. Let me help you compare the paths and then I will get you the right mortgage.

Not All Reverse Mortgage Offers Are the Same

Homeowners may be able to compare multiple reverse mortgage lenders. Rates, set-up costs, renewal terms, available amounts, and fine print are not the same.

Lender AMore money
Lender BLower fees
Lender CBetter terms
Lender DMay not fit

A reverse mortgage specialist can compare lenders, explain the fine print in plain language, and help you avoid costly mistakes, with no extra cost to you.

Where lender choice is limited, the comparison still matters: a reverse mortgage should be weighed against a HELOC, refinance, or doing nothing.

Frequently Asked Questions — Atlantic Canada Reverse Mortgages

Are reverse mortgages available in Atlantic Canada?

Yes. Reverse mortgages are available in Atlantic Canada, including Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island. The amount available depends on age, property value, property type, postal code, appraisal, and lender rules.

Why should I speak with a broker before choosing?

If this may be the last mortgage you ever arrange, it is worth getting it right. My role is to help you compare the practical choices: reverse mortgage, HELOC, regular mortgage, or no new mortgage at all.

Do you charge a fee for reverse mortgages?

No. I do not charge a fee to arrange a reverse mortgage, and I also do not charge a fee to arrange any institutional mortgage.

Is a HELOC safer than a reverse mortgage?

No. A HELOC is not safer; it is a completely different product. It is a demand loan, payments are required every month, the rate can change when prime changes, and the lender can reduce your available credit limit. A reverse mortgage is different because your approved borrowing limit does not change in the same way and monthly payments are optional, but it still has fine print. That is exactly why it helps to compare the products with an independent mortgage professional before you decide.
